Day 42 - Amarillo, TX (Day 1)

We're leaving for Texas today after four days of sight-seeing in and around Taos.  It's been a delightful visit.

Departure:
There was little evidence of last night's intense storm this morning.  There were just a few wet spots.

The hook-up and put-a-way tasks got done without a hitch (pun intended) and we had ample time to say goodbye to Adele and her traveling mate Cindy.

FYI ... they call their trailer "Bedonkadonk" (aka Badonkadonk).  We leave it to the interested readers to figure out what it means.

The Route:
A very pleasant, 309 mile drive got us to Amarillo, TX.  We took NM-518 from Taos to Las Vegas, I-25 from Las Vegas to Romeroville, US-84 from Romeroville to I-40, then east on I-40 to Amarillo.

Observations:
The drive on NM-518 from Taos to Mora felt like a private, scenic tour.  There was absolutely no traffic.  We wondered if we had missed a memo somewhere.  The gradual terrain changes were fun to watch.

Scenery had a whole new look by the time we reached I-40.
The land finally got some personality back
as we approached the TX border
Sometimes we do "emergency stops"
in odd places
We've been in NM for 12 days
OK Texas, here we come!
We saw this wind farm soon after entering TX

The Campground:
It was a long drive and we lost an hour on the way.  The office was closed when we arrived at Fort Amarillo RV Resort.  Fortunately, we'd called ahead earlier today for a reservation.  We're in site #197.

The park has lots of amenities and is highly rated.  The sites aren't nearly as attractive as the ones we left this morning.

Trouble:
We think Carol was bitten by an insect when we stopped for gas in Vega, TX.  She had quite a reaction.  Less than 5 minutes after leaving the gas station a large welt appeared on her right forearm.  It swelled to the size of a small lemon and became discolored.  She has no memory of bumping anything.  The injury is uncomfortable, but not painful.  She iced it.  We may have a doctor take a look tomorrow.

Reflection:
We create these daily postings so we can remember meaningful events.  Our topics usually include scenery, weather, geography, history, food and other general stuff.  Today we're going off script a bit because something unexpected and quite special happened in the past few days.  We need to write about it in hopes we can remember.  It may be a lot like trying to "capture lightning in a bottle".

Three days ago we said hello to a stranger.  It's happened before.  No big deal.

It turned out to be a big deal, however.  Over the course of three days and through some very enjoyable conversations this stranger became an acquaintance, then hopefully a friend.  We've never experienced anything like it.  This event reminds us that these travels shouldn't be so much about places and things as about the people we meet.

We met Adele Amos and her friend Cindy in Taos.  Adele took the time to share her life adventures and dreams openly with us.  Thank you!  We're grateful and we don't want to forget.
