Day 41 - Taos, NM (Day 4)

*Posted on Monday, September 23*

Today was a teaser.  We woke to bright sunshine, but the late afternoon and evening got quite different.

Breakfast:
Our neighbor Adele stopped by and we went to breakfast at Doc Martin's Restaurant.  It was a fun time filled with lots of stories and laughing.  The electricity went out a few times, but that didn't affect the breakfast or the good time.
At least the lights were on for a picture

Change of Plans:
We originally planned to see Ghost Ranch again and to visit Chaco Canyon while we were here in New Mexico.  After some rethinking, we decided to skip both stops.  Nothing new is drawing us to Ghost Ranch and Chaco Canyon is in a very remote location.

High Road to Taos:
We took a few pictures of the campground, then let the sunshine call us out on the road.

We drove south on NM-68 to Espanola where we started National Geographic's Scenic Byway High Road to Taos (Page 295).
Chimayo was the first point of interest

We saw Ortega's Weaving Shop and Rancho de Chimayo, but couldn't find Santuario de Chimayo (legendary center for curing the sick).
The climb on NM-76 out of Chimayo
displayed some exceptional valley views

The travel guide continually referenced being on NM-518 between Chimayo and Las Trampas. Unfortunately, the route doesn't exist there.
The weather was deteriorating, so
we passed by Cordova

and attractions connect

Cordova from afar

NM-76 continues through Truchas and into the Carson National Forest.  We missed a subtle turn at Truchas and ended up driving into the heart of the village.  It looked as close to being abandoned as we could have imagined.

Las Trampas was as quiet as Truchas.  Granted, it is late Sunday afternoon and a storm is closing in on the area.  We did get to see a beautiful 253 year old adobe church.

Rain started soon after we left Las Trampas.  We stopped the tour and headed home.

The Storm:
Dark clouds formed during the afternoon and the forecast called for a "gully washer".

Adele stopped by to visit soon after we got back to the trailer.  The wind, rain, thunder and lightning became really intense.  It was a good time to be together, inside and dry.

During a brief calm, Adele invited us to dinner at 5 Star Burgers.  The storm got more intense while we were there.  The rain was being blown horizontally.

We headed back to the trailer after a brief side-trip to Baskin-Robbins.  The ice cream calmed some of our storm-shaken nerves and lots of conversation soothed the rest.
