The Route:
We took TX-87 from Galveston to High Island, TX-124 from High Island to Winnie, I-10 from Winnie to Beaumont, US-96 from Beaumont to Tenaha, US-59 from Tenaha to I-20, then west on I-20 to Longview. The TX-87 portion included a free ferry ride from Galveston to Port Bolivar and a delightful drive up Bolivar Peninsula.
The ferry ride ...

The "gull guards" see us off |
USS Cavalla is berthed in Seawolf Park as a memorial to the lost submarine USS Seawolf |
SS Selma An oil tanker constructed of concrete was intentionally scuttled in 1922 |
5 or 6 ferries shuttle traffic across the bay |
It's cooler on deck |
A number of tankers moved in and out of the bay |
Arriving at Port Bolivar landing |
There are three ways to "drive" onto Galveston Island. We used two ... from the southwest via Bluewater Highway and from the northeast via ferry.
Bolivar Peninsula ...
TX-87 runs the length of this narrow peninsula. We saw grazing cattle, oil wells, shrimp boats, lots of elevated resort homes and sad remnants of Hurricane Ike.
Point Bolivar lighthouse (built in 1872, served for 61 years) |
Shrimp boats were working the coast |
TX-87 follows the Gulf closely |
Many homes on the peninsula are raised 2 or 3 levels |
Oil wells were hard at work |
TX-124 crosses the Intracoastal Waterway |
Hmm ... could this be the highway to heaven? |
The Waterway flows through a huge, coastal plain |
The Campground:
We want to see the largest cypress forest in the world at Caddo Lake. There weren't many RV camping options near the lake, so we selected Fernbrook RV Park in Longview as a jumping off point. The park is highly rated in every way and is one of the least expensive we've stayed in for weeks.
